Review - Lenovo ThinkPad X61 Tablet PC

x61tablet.jpg

[14 July] TabletPCReview reviewed the new Thinkpad X61 TabletPC, the one I really want.  One of the best thing noticed is that the screen is 12.1” 1400×1050 pixel and that’s a lot of screen estate.  The other is the long battery life, I’m surely drooling over this tablet PC.  Pros and cons from the reviewer extracted below.  Click here for the full article.

 Pros:

  • Excellent screen, plenty of real estate
  • Keyboard is easy to type on, no flex
  • Sturdy, light, and great battery life
  • Fast operation and boot times
  • Wacom digitizer
  • Great protection plan

Cons:

  • Comes with a bit of bloatware
  • No optical drive (without ultrabase)
  • Sometimes difficult to see screen outdoors
  • Bluetooth is funny with data transfer (with my phone)
  • Sometimes difficult to disconnect computer from ultrabase

[Updated: 20 July] Another short review on the Thinkpad X61 Tablet PC up at The Student Tablet PC site, this time from a college student’s point of view, link here.  Also another one from ReviewPub, link here. The different types of screen was best covered here in the review.

“The screen is a 12.1″ matte screen that’s multi-touch.  Multi-touch means you can use the digitized pen as a method of input or touch it with your finger.  The pen works great, it actually feels somewhat like a real pen as you write in applications such as Windows Journal or One Note.  The touch screen comes in handy for things such as quickly opening menus or pushing OK buttons on dialog boxes by simply pressing the screen.

The screen brightness is okay, it certainly could be a little brighter, but overall it’s adequate, especially for a business notebook.

I should mention that there are a few options for the screen.  The SXGA (hi resolution) option will appeal to those that want to fit more onto the small 12.1″ screen.  The regular XGA option (non multi-touch screen) is the cheapest option, it of course still offers digitizer pen input.”

Still no news when it’s releasing here in Hong Kong but pretty sure listed price for the basic unit will be HK$24,000 up.

  1. As of today IBM will not offer the three screen options anymore it seems. any ideas why this is so ?

  2. Seems like Lenovo pulled the plug on the SXGA+ screen option. The following was extracted off TabletPCReview Forum, not sure how true it is -

“many of the SXGA+ screens that arrived in the latest shipment failed for various reasons, thus making the wait for those who already ordered that much worse. The “tax free” wkend also is kicking them in the @$$. that is why they have pulled the SXGA+ option for the next few months until they can get back in the black on these things…”
