Lenovo W700 Now Available for Order
10 days ago, I blogged about the upcoming dream notebook for photographers, the Lenovo ThinkPad W700, on my sideblog (full specs and press release posted there), the Phooey Pics. Today, we got news that the Lenovo ThinkPad W700 is now available for order and the delivery date is roughly a month from now. As for the price tag, well, expect to ditch out at least US$2,978 for the basic configuration which features 17-inch WXGA+ display, T9400 CPU, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, NVIDIA’s 512MB Quadro FX-2700 and a 160GB hard drive.
What makes the ThinkPad W700 so special and so expensive (even more than the 17″ MacBook Pro) is not only the specs but the integrated digitizer which photographers would love while working on their photo editing programs.
Can’t wait for its local release here in Hong Kong, will update when I hear more.

Michael Chang Inducted Into The International Tennis Hall of Fame

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP)—Michael Chang finds it appropriate he’s receiving his sport’s highest honor as China awaits the Olympics.
Chang was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday and reflected on his experiences as a Chinese-American athlete. He won the 1989 French Open at age 17—the youngest man to win a major—as the Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing were escalating into bloodshed.
“For me, at the French Open, if I wasn’t playing my match I was glued to CNN watching the events unfold,” Chang said during a news conference before his induction. “The crackdown actually happened that Sunday of the French Open.”

Sydney Pollack Dies @ 73
Sydney Pollack helped make a sex symbol of Robert Redford, an Oscar-caliber star of Jane Fonda and a woman of Dustin Hoffman.
Pollack, the quintessential actor’s director of Tootsie, The Way We Were and more, who seemed most comfortable in the company of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and vice versa, died tonight of cancer at his Los Angeles home.
The filmmaker, a two-time Oscar-winner, was 73.
“Sydney made the world a little better, movies a little better and even dinner a little better,” George Clooney said in a statement. “A tip of the hat to a class act. He’ll be missed terribly.”

China Announces 3 Days of National Mourning
2008-05-19 HKT 00:15
China has announced three days of national mourning for an estimated 50,000 people who died in Monday’s earthquake in Sichuan – the magnitude of which has now been revised to eight on the Richter scale. The Olympic torch relay will be suspended during that time. And there will be three minutes of silence this afternoon. The arrangements will also be implemented in Hong Kong. The confirmed death toll has risen to more than 32-thousand, with more than 220-thousand injured.

Indeed a Sad Day – 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake in Chengdu, China
Pic from Associated Press
BEIJING (Reuters) – The most devastating earthquake to hit China in three decades has killed up to 5,000 people and left as many as 10,000 injured, toppling eight schools and at least one hospital, state media said.
An estimated 3,000 to 5,000 people were killed in Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County in mountainous Sichuan province after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the region during the early afternoon on Monday, Xinhua news agency said, citing the local government.
As many as 10,000 in Beichuan were feared injured and 80 percent of the buildings there had been destroyed, the report said.
Beichuan’s population is 161,000, meaning about one in 10 residents were killed or injured in the quake. The county is a part of Mianyang city, and about 160 km (100 miles) from the provincial capital, Chengdu.
Hundreds of people were buried under rubble in Shifang in Sichuan as several schools, factories and dormitories collapsed during the quake, the official Xinhua news agency said.
The death toll was expected to rise sharply as authorities and rescue teams made contact with the worst-hit areas of Sichuan, where phone lines have been cut off since the quake struck.
The quake is the worst to hit China in 32 years since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in northeastern China where up to 300,000 died.
Monday’s quake hit in the middle of the school day, toppling at least eight schools, leaving hundreds of students and teachers trapped, state media said.
About 900 teenagers were buried in the rubble of a collapsed three-storey school building in the Sichuan city of Dujiangyan.
Local villagers had already helped dozens of students out of the ruins and five cranes were excavating at the site as anxious parents looked on, Xinhua said.

CNET Asia Community Blog Entry – The Radio Saga of Hong Kong’s very own Citizens’ Radio
[14 January] My new entry over at CNET Asia Community Blog is up. This week’s entry, “The Radio Saga of Hong Kong’s very own Citizens’ Radio”. Click here for the read.
[Updated: 23 January] Following to my post on the Citizens’ Radio, I received the following mail from Stephen Dunifer,
Hi!
Thank you for providing the background on the struggles of Citizens Radio. Their saga is remarkably similar to what myself and other Free Speech activists went through in the United States some years ago. For details, please use my name, “Stephen Dunifer”, and Free Radio Berkeley as search terms. Also, check out these two websites – www.freeradio.org and www.radiotupa.org. I have continued to promote the cause of Free Speech on the airwaves since Free Radio Berkeley was shut down by a court injunction in 1998 by aiding and encouraging communities to put their own radio stations on the air. Currently, I am in Shenzhen visiting a friend and checking out the local electronics scene which is quite amazing – looking to source parts from here and possibly have mass assembly done for a 10 watt FM transmitter PCB. We design and manufacture our own line of transmitters and other related gear. Kind of low tech compared to CDMA cell phones and the like but they get the job done. I will be headed to India on Sunday for a week. Community radio is just getting off the ground there. Then it is back to Hong Kong for a couple of days and then returning to San Francisco on Feb. 5th.
It would be great to meet some of the folks in Citizens Radio and swap stories. Perhaps you would be able to convey this to them.
Best regards,
Stephen Dunifer
[Updated: 15 April] Woot, the Citizens’ Radio will be back on air this Sunday.
