Hands on Review – Treo 750V

Treo 750VTreo today screen

(Hong Kong, 2 November 2006) SmarTone-Vodafone, Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) and Microsoft today launched the new 3G Palm Treo 750v from Vodafone, running on Windows Mobile 5.0., for the Hong Kong market. “We are pleased to partner with Palm and Microsoft, two industry leaders, in launching the Treo 750v,” said Mr. Douglas Li, Chief Executive Officer of SmarTone-Vodafone. “The Treo 750v continues to provide the hallmark Palm ease of use experience. Together with our Vodafone Business Email, customers can now stay productive while on the go. This is another way we help our customers do business without compromise.”…..(full details)

Those in Hong Kong probably saw the ads on all major newspaper the past week. Saw the real thing last Thursday at the SmarTone shop in Shatin (sorry about the delay in posting, social life been at its best, :)). To tell the truth, not totally impressed. The screen size of 240×240 just don’t give enough screen territory to work with. For those used to PocketPC, a Palm tailor-made Treo 240×240 today screen basically is useless, unless u’re so fond of the caller pic quick dial. On my Dopod 838pro, I can format the today screen to display my SMS, email messages header, my appointments, all without a second click (of course with a program like Pocket Breeze). But for the Treo, it only gives you a summary, of how many upcoming appointments, how many tasks, for details, one have to click further in. Next comes the stylus, it’s long and plastic, too light to hold in my opinion, just lack that solid feel and that goes for the case itself as well, also very plastic. The lack of WiFi on the Treo is also a major drawback. Having a $6,000 phone and not being able to surf in the hotspots downtown just don’t make much sense. All in all, I’m glad I got my Dopod.
