Mstislav Rostropovich Died at 80

Photo from Associated Press

MOSCOW: Legendary Russian cellist and emblem of resistance to the Soviet system Mstislav Rostropovich died yesterday, aged 80. He died in hospital today,” his spokeswoman said. He had been ill for some time and had been receiving treatment at a Moscow cancer clinic. He was born in Baku and studied in Moscow under celebrated composers Dmitry Shostakovich and Sergei Prokofiev. He then had a glittering international career, much of it spent abroad after he was persecuted, then expelled in 1974 by the Soviet authorities. Rostropovich was considered one of the greatest cellists of all time. His exploration of the tonal range of the instrument was unrivalled and he collaborated with some of the 20th century’s finest composers. [AFP]

Funny Reads on Entertainment News

Finally, Rosie O’Donnell is calling it quit on ABC daytime show, The View.  After all that racist remarks (see previous post here) and the public feuds with Bill O’Reilly and Donald Trump, I’m surprise she lasted that long.  Full story from E! News here.

Actor Alec Balwin will apologize to his daughter on national television on Friday for calling her a “thoughtless little pig,” according to excerpts from a pre-taped ABC interview released on Thursday. [Reuters]  I’m not sure about this one, what’s so improper or inappropriate to call your kid a pig when you’re frustrated (at least not for us Chinese).

The last one is even more absurd.  From New Delhi, a court issued arrest warrants for Hollywood actor Richard Gereand Bollywood star Shipa Shetty (winner on the British reality show “Celebrity Big Brother”) on Thursday, saying their kiss at a public function “transgressed all limits of vulgarity,” media reports said. Judge Dinesh Gupta issued the warrants in the northwestern city of Jaipur after a local citizen filed a complaint charging that the public display of affection offended local sensibilities, the Press Trust of India news agency (PTI) reported. Gupta earlier viewed television footage of the event, which he called “highly sexually erotic,” saying the pair violated India’s strict public obscenity laws. Gere and Shetty “transgressed all limits of vulgarity and have the tendency to corrupt the society,” PTI quoted the judge as saying.

The problematic PDA went down at an HIV/AIDS awareness summit in New Delhi, where Gere swooped Shetty into his arms, dipped her, and planted kisses on her cheeks (see pic above). Shetty has defended the actor, saying he was simply reenacting a scene from his film Shall We Dance in an attempt to connect with the crowd, as he did not speak Hindi. “I understand this is his culture, not ours. But this was not such a big thing or so obscene for people to overreact in such manner,” she told the PTI last week. [Associated Press and E! News]

The Pandas are Here

Photos from RTHK

A plane carrying two pandas which have been given to Hong Kong by China – as a gift to mark the 10th anniversary of handover- has landed at Chek Lap Kok airport. The pandas have been named: Le Le (樂 樂) for 606, which means happiness; and Ying Ying (盈 盈) for 610, which stands for abundance. The bears are being transported to Ocean Park to be quarantined. They’re expected to go on public display on July the 1st. [Extracted from RTHK News]

On a side note, RTHK seems to run the most up-to-date English local news, not sure why the HK Government wants to can them.

Exhibition Opening: Ms. Gabrielle Pool

M1NT Gallery Presents Ms. Gabrielle Pool
Exhibition Opening
Cocktail Reception: Wednesday May 2, 7pm-9pm
M1NT Gallery, 108 Hollywood Road
RSVP, (852) 2261 1111, or email booking@M1NT.com.hk

M1NT Gallery takes great pleasure in introducing the extraordinary talent of Ms Gabrielle Pool who will be present at the opening.

Born on a farm in New Zealand in 1976 Gabrielle Pool began exhibiting at the age of 16. She has since exhibited in New Zealand, Japan, U.K, Bahamas and Australia, where she now resides.

A major art collector  bought three of Gabrielle’s paintings from her October 2006 exhibition in London one day and a rare Monet the next – her works keep very good company.

In 2004 Gabrielle was one of the chosen few from around the world invited by the former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela to collaborate in the International Unity Series – superimposing their own native “stamp” over Nelson Mandela’s own artworks.

In early 2005 Gabrielle lived and worked with the Hamer tribe of Winyarki Village in Southern Ethiopia under the guidance of National Geographic Field Producer, Stuart MacLeod. Gabrielle fully immersed herself in tribal life to explore the quintessence of African culture, and documenting her experience with paintings, often using the tribes body painting clays as pigment in her work. Gabrielle is currently the subject of a documentary commissioned by TVNZ following her journey as an artist, and her collaboration with Nelson Mandela in the International Unity Series.
