CNET Asia Community Blog Entry – The Radio Saga of Hong Kong’s very own Citizens’ Radio

cnet-logo.jpg

[14 January] My new entry over at CNET Asia Community Blog is up. This week’s entry, “The Radio Saga of Hong Kong’s very own Citizens’ Radio”. Click here for the read.

[Updated: 23 January] Following to my post on the Citizens’ Radio, I received the following mail from Stephen Dunifer,

Hi!

Thank you for providing the background on the struggles of Citizens Radio. Their saga is remarkably similar to what myself and other Free Speech activists went through in the United States some years ago. For details, please use my name, “Stephen Dunifer”, and Free Radio Berkeley as search terms. Also, check out these two websites – www.freeradio.org and www.radiotupa.org. I have continued to promote the cause of Free Speech on the airwaves since Free Radio Berkeley was shut down by a court injunction in 1998 by aiding and encouraging communities to put their own radio stations on the air. Currently, I am in Shenzhen visiting a friend and checking out the local electronics scene which is quite amazing – looking to source parts from here and possibly have mass assembly done for a 10 watt FM transmitter PCB. We design and manufacture our own line of transmitters and other related gear. Kind of low tech compared to CDMA cell phones and the like but they get the job done. I will be headed to India on Sunday for a week. Community radio is just getting off the ground there. Then it is back to Hong Kong for a couple of days and then returning to San Francisco on Feb. 5th.

It would be great to meet some of the folks in Citizens Radio and swap stories. Perhaps you would be able to convey this to them.

Best regards,

Stephen Dunifer

[Updated: 15 April] Woot, the Citizens’ Radio will be back on air this Sunday.

Get a Dell 3008WFP? Not

If you’re thinking about getting the Dell 3009WFP, you better think twice because Engadget just reported that Dell might be running into issues regarding the 30-inch monitor,

“The Dell 3008 monitor has been well received since launch and has been very popular with customers. In February we experienced a small technical issue with the product that has been long resolved. [Um, it’s only April? –Ed.] Currently the monitors are on extended lead times and in order to manage demand, the 3008 is not available on dell.com. We are managing orders on a prioritized basis and hope to have the product available to all customers in the near future.”

Review – HP2133 UMPC

Following my last post on the HP 2133 UMPC, James Kendrick over at jkOnTheRun received a test unit for a week and he just publish a very long and thorough review on it. His take on the HP 2133 –

“I think HP has a real winner on their hands with the Mini. I find it to be a capable notebook computer that is highly portable and the build quality is outstanding. I also find it impressive that the total price swing from entry level (with Linux) to fully loaded is only $250 and there is no question in my mind that the Mini is the best built UMPC at this price level. I wish HP had put an Intel processor instead of the Via but that is probably my long-time prejudice against the Via rather than any actual observed issue. I find it delightful that HP will allow consumers to configure a Mini exactly as desired on their online store which is unusual for such a low-cost device. I would have no problem recommending the Mini to anyone looking for a highly mobile notebook with few compromises.”

If that’s not enough, check out his video review on the HP 2133. For your information, the HP 2133 is ready for order now in the US.
