First Look – HTC Touch HD

Well, been a busy week for HTC with their new releases, the HTC Touch HD, the HTC Touch Viva and the HTC Touch 3G.  Today, we’re gonna take a first look at the HTC HD.  The great thing about this phone is definitely the HUGE screen size, 480×800 WVGA resolution, that’s a notch up from the HTC Diamond and Pro.  Size wise, it’s about the same as the iPhone, so it would be interesting to see how it fares when it is launched.  Specification of the HTC Touch HD as follows –

  • Processor – Qualcomm® MSM 7201A™ 528 MHz
  • Operating System – Windows Mobile® 6.1 Professional
  • Memory – ROM: 512MB, RAM:288MB
  • Dimensions – 115 mm x 62.8 mm x 12 mm
  • Weight – 146.4 grams with battery
  • Display – 3.8-inch TFT-LCD flat touch-sensitive screen with 480 x 800 WVGA resolution
  • Networks – Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, Dual-band WCDMA/HSDPA:900/2100MHz. HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
  • Connectivity – Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate and A2DP for wireless stereo headsets, Wi-Fi: IEEE 802.11 b/g
  • Battery – 1350 mAh
  • Expansion – microSD™ memory card (SD 2.0 compatible)
  • Others – FM Radio, G-Sensor, GPS and A-GPS ready

iPhone 2.1 Software Update

Finally have time to install the new iPhone 2.1 update on my iPhone.  Took me a little bit over 40 minutes for the whole update and install process (237.8MB altogether this time).  Really like the new functions, such as more info on tracks/podcast played on the iPod and time remaining from last played; the 3G/EDGE signal upgrade (reception seemed a lot better at least for me); shorter backup time (gee, thanks Apple, finally) and installation for new apps; and the Genius playlist which I don’t have time to play around yet.  As for the rumored better/longer battery life, still need couple days to tell.

However, been getting a lot of mixed reviews all across the wire.  Engadget ran an article saying that some users been experiencing degradation to their 3G signals and been having problem with their email.  Guess we’ll find out how all that pans out in a few days.

How’s your upgrade working?

MacBook Touch Soon?

Pic from Gizmodo

Pic from Gizmodo

This from Gizmodo and MacDailyNews,

“Think MacBook screen, possibly a bit smaller, in glass with iPhone-like, but fuller-featured multi-touch. Gesture library. Full Mac OS X. This is why they bought P.A. Semi. Possibly with Immersion’s haptic tech. Slot-loading SuperDrive. Accelerometer. GPS. Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at “low” price that will reduce margins. Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will. This is some sick shit. App Store-compatible, able to run Mac apps, too. By October at the latest.”

I know I’ll be getting this if it’s for real.

Minibus Hong Kong for iPhone

When I first heard of this application in beta, I was really excited as I believed an application like this would be very useful especially where minibus routes in Hong Kong are so complicated.  The database is stored on the iPhone and no internet connection is needed.

As for the downside, the application is in Chinese and it’s a bit expensive for US$9.99.  It would also be neat if the developers can incorporate the GPS locator into the application.

Confession of the Day – I Got a Job

For those of you who have been following my site pretty close the past year or so, you probably noticed that I’ve been a bit slack on posting the past week.  Hmm…I know, some of you even sent me emails asking me what I’ve been up to.  Well, the reason is because I just landed a real job after 7 months hiatus.  At first I thought I’m gonna retire for good but at the age of 41….wishful thinking.  So, I’ve decided to re-enter into society and am now 1 week into my new job.  Nothing to do with IT, but just with my old profession, procurement that is.  So far, I’ve having much fun and enjoying working at the new place with my new colleagues.  As for the blog, I will pick up the slack once honeymoon is over around here at the workplace (you all know how that works).

By the way, now that I’m on it, will announce the winners to the iPhone Power Station within this week (takes a while to sort it out as we have over 200 contestants and I do need more time to sort everything out).

Else where, Barcamp Hong Kong just finished over the weekend and if you missed it like I did (because of the new job), be sure you sign up to the coming one.  For the meantime, come by to the Web Wednesday gatherings.  Too lazy to link here (go search it using my search engine below, had 13 pints of beer tonight, feel like slacking off a bit).

One last note, now that the Legislative Council election is over, it’s a pity that one of the finest IT guys, Charles Mok, couldn’t make it through just by a small margin.  Charles, we’re with you all the way and come back 2012. We’ll show you where the Rose Garden is by then.

Okay, gonna hit the sack, one too many (14 was my last count, in pints that is).  Love you all.  Tomorrow, I will be at the Bethanie Campus if any of you are around Pok Fu Lam.

P.S. Steve, text me when you’re back in town, need a drinking mate in Wanch.
