CNET Asia Community Blog Entry – Twestival – 12 February 2009

My new entry over at CNET Asia Community Blog is up. This week’s entry, “What Makes a Country/City a Gadget Haven? (Part 2 – Hong Kong)”. Click here for the read.

On 12 February 2009, 175+ international cities will be hosting a Twestival to bring Twitter communities together in an effort to raise money for charity: water. Twestival is organized 100% by international volunteers around the world and 100% of the money raised from these events will go directly to support charity: water projects. By rallying together globally, under short timescales, for a single aim on the same day, the Twestival hopes to bring awareness to this global crisis. ~ excerpt from Twestival Hong Kong

Why water one might ask? well, with over 1.1 billion people on planet Earth now which don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water (one out of six amongst the total population), that’s a major problem.

According to the Twestival website, “Many communities in developing nations often have a plentiful supply of clean drinking water just below the ground, but no way to get to it. This is where charity: water and their partner organizations come in. Drilling a well can cost from $4,000 – $12,000 USD and many living on less than $1 a day cannot afford one in their community, even if the money is combined.”

So you wanna help out and participate in the event? Join Twestival by:

For those in Hong Kong, Twestival will be taking place on the February 12th at Yumla Bar (Address:  Lower Basement, 79 Wyndham Street, Central, Hong Kong, tel: +852 2147 2382 / e-mail: contact@yumla.com). Festivities will kick off at 8pm and will include a live performance from N™ and a DJ. Tickets are just HK$100 and include a free drink. All proceeds go to Charity:Water.

To ensure that none of the money gets “lost”, tickets must be purchased from the Twestival charity website in advance. Space is limited, so get your tickets early.

Art Sunday Hong Kong – 8 February 2009

Hong Kong’s art and cultural landscape has recently undergone a renaissance, from the art auction rooms to the international acclaim of local artists. Galleries are blossoming and a sense of excitement, long associated with just the hallowed streets of downtown New York, is gathering locally and internationally
about Hong Kong’s potential as Asia’s art capital.

Now, Hong Kong art galleries in Central, SoHo, and Sheung Wan, have come together to bring a sense of community, education and easy accessibility back into art. On Sunday 8th February, these art galleries will open from 11am – 5pm for Art Sunday, continuing on the first Sunday of the month thereafter.

This free event will allow families, friends, neighbours and those out for a leisurely Sunday afternoon, to engage with art, chat to their local gallerists, and listen to talks about art and artwork. Children will be able to participate in creative workshops and learn about art in a fun and interactive environment.

Local cafes and restaurants will join in sponsoring the event, providing brunch and drinks for local participating galleries and Art Sunday promotions for the day.

With over 20 galleries and a number of local restaurants participating, Art Sunday guarantees something for everyone and is a wonderful way to support Hong Kong’s art community.

Art Sunday – continues in 2009: dates are 8 February, 5 April 2009, 3 May 2009
