Phottix Strato II Multi 5-in-1 Trigger Set Review by FlashRaw

FlashRaw posted a very thorough review on the all new Phottix Strato II Multi 5-in-1 Trigger Set together with some really nice shots and demonstration pics. The new Strato II line evolved from its much successful Strato I line with cool new features like 4 group selector; screw-down locks for both transmitters & receivers; dedicated On/Off Switches on both transmitters & receivers and improved compatibility with Nikon SB-600 Speedlight.

My studio, PASM Workshop is now carrying both the Nikon and Canon versions, sorry Sony lovers, guess you all have to wait a bit. It comes in two different packings. One is the 5-in-1 Tigger Set with a transmitter and receiver (HK$690 list price and PASM price is HK$630) for Canon and Nikon and one is the receiver only set for both Canon and Nikon (HK$345 list price and HK$320 for PASM members and fans). To order, you can (a) buy it online through their Products Page and payment is via Paypal or (b) send your orders to sales@pasm-workshop.com and their sales team will get back to you.

I’m not going into details of the new triggers as FlashRaw did a great job in review it, just extracting their end notes and conclusion here for your reference.

End Notes and Conclusion

In case you just skipped here to the conclusion after skimming through the photos of the new Strato Multi triggers from Phottix, here’s a rundown of the key points:

Pro:

  • 4 selectable groups
  • TTL pass-through
  • Backwards compatibility with last-generation Stratos
  • Reliable & 100% clean triggering at 1/250
  • Great build quality
  • Locking hotshoe pins
  • Locking screw-down dials
  • Receivers & transmitters use common AAA batteries
  • Metal foot on transmitter
  • Metal threaded socket on receivers
  • Easy 4-position slider for channels (no dip switches)
  • Standard mini-jack connections (no proprietary connectors)
  • Cheaper than Pocketwizards, Elinchrom Skyports, Paul C. Buff Cybersyncs, etc.

Cons:

  • Plastic foot on receiver
  • Slightly less range than last generation Strato triggers (as tested)
  • Slightly less dense/rigid plastic used than last generation Strato triggers

The last generation of Phottix Strato were excellent triggers – they hit a fair price point with almost peerless build quality, innovative features (TTL pass-though) and the reliability of much more expensive triggers.

The new Strato Multi system takes these core attributes and adds user-selectable groups for even more flexibility, not to mention backward compatibility with the last generation of Phottix Strato receivers. All these features add up to a really solid triggering system that’s equally happy firing speedlights or studio strobes, all with the reliability professional shooting demands.

[15 May 2011] If you’re a Sony NEX Camera user, you probably knows the blog Sony Alpha NEX Cameras and E mount Lenses. Couple days ago they posted details of the new Sony NEX Firmware Version 04 details, link here.

The new features, the picture effects and the manual focus assist are definitely gonna turn some heads, be it existing owners or others considering buying the NEX cameras.

Picture Effects

The download link for the manual is here, http://www.filedropper.com/sonyalphanex-blogspot-com-firmware04-manual

So far, no news as to when the firmware is coming out but my guess is anytime now, stay tuned.

SONY NEX Firmware Released

Shortly after SOny released their mirroless NEX-3 and NEX-5, they released the first firmware upgrade today.  Got my Sony NEX-5 two days ago (review and pics later), and I can say this update came at the best time.  So what’s new with this firmware? Sony added 3D sweep panorama (but only viewable on their own Sony Bravia TV, gee!). Apart from that,

  • Improvement of ‘normal’ 2D Sweep Panorama shooting;
  • Decreased power drain when the camera is switched off;
  • Quicker start-up in low-light conditions.

You can find the download page here. Oh, one more thing, the firmware upgrade is for PC only, Mac users, eat your heart out.

Review – Olympus E-P1 Digital Pen from Gear Diary

Image from Gear Diary

Image from Gear Diary

Raymond Ser over at Gear Diary posted up his first part of the review on the all new Olympus E-P1 Digital Pen this week.  As Raymond puts it, the review is more from an amateur perspective which I found to be very easy to read (lacks the camera jargon).  That coupled with some really nice shots of the Olympus E-P1 Digital Pen, definitely a good review on the camera.  Check out his review here.  Can’t wait for the second part.

For those interested to know, the street price of the Olympus E-P1 Digital Pen in Hong Kong is around HK$6,880 (US$882).
