Indeed a Sad Day – 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake in Chengdu, China

Pic from Associated Press

BEIJING (Reuters) – The most devastating earthquake to hit China in three decades has killed up to 5,000 people and left as many as 10,000 injured, toppling eight schools and at least one hospital, state media said.

An estimated 3,000 to 5,000 people were killed in Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County in mountainous Sichuan province after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the region during the early afternoon on Monday, Xinhua news agency said, citing the local government.

As many as 10,000 in Beichuan were feared injured and 80 percent of the buildings there had been destroyed, the report said.

Beichuan’s population is 161,000, meaning about one in 10 residents were killed or injured in the quake. The county is a part of Mianyang city, and about 160 km (100 miles) from the provincial capital, Chengdu.

Hundreds of people were buried under rubble in Shifang in Sichuan as several schools, factories and dormitories collapsed during the quake, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The death toll was expected to rise sharply as authorities and rescue teams made contact with the worst-hit areas of Sichuan, where phone lines have been cut off since the quake struck.

The quake is the worst to hit China in 32 years since the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in northeastern China where up to 300,000 died.

Monday’s quake hit in the middle of the school day, toppling at least eight schools, leaving hundreds of students and teachers trapped, state media said.

About 900 teenagers were buried in the rubble of a collapsed three-storey school building in the Sichuan city of Dujiangyan.

Local villagers had already helped dozens of students out of the ruins and five cranes were excavating at the site as anxious parents looked on, Xinhua said.

CNET Asia Community Blog Entry – The Radio Saga of Hong Kong’s very own Citizens’ Radio

[14 January] My new entry over at CNET Asia Community Blog is up. This week’s entry, “The Radio Saga of Hong Kong’s very own Citizens’ Radio”. Click here for the read.

[Updated: 23 January] Following to my post on the Citizens’ Radio, I received the following mail from Stephen Dunifer,

Thank you for providing the background on the struggles of Citizens Radio. Their saga is remarkably similar to what myself and other Free Speech activists went through in the United States some years ago. For details, please use my name, “Stephen Dunifer”, and Free Radio Berkeley as search terms. Also, check out these two websites – www.freeradio.org and www.radiotupa.org. I have continued to promote the cause of Free Speech on the airwaves since Free Radio Berkeley was shut down by a court injunction in 1998 by aiding and encouraging communities to put their own radio stations on the air. Currently, I am in Shenzhen visiting a friend and checking out the local electronics scene which is quite amazing – looking to source parts from here and possibly have mass assembly done for a 10 watt FM transmitter PCB. We design and manufacture our own line of transmitters and other related gear. Kind of low tech compared to CDMA cell phones and the like but they get the job done. I will be headed to India on Sunday for a week. Community radio is just getting off the ground there. Then it is back to Hong Kong for a couple of days and then returning to San Francisco on Feb. 5th.

It would be great to meet some of the folks in Citizens Radio and swap stories. Perhaps you would be able to convey this to them.

Best regards,

Stephen Dunifer

[Updated: 15 April] Woot, the Citizens’ Radio will be back on air this Sunday.

Li Ka-shing Ups Facebook Stake to $120 Million

Time for some boring news regarding Li Ka-Shing and Facebook, source from Reuters.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Social networking site Facebook has closed a second $60 million investment round with Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing through his foundation, a source familiar with the deal confirmed on Thursday.

The source said the deal, which boosts Li’s holdings in Facebook to $120 million, including an earlier $60 million round late last year, is valued on the same $15 billion terms as a $240 million stake Microsoft took in October.

Li’s investment was made by the Li Ka Shing Foundation. Li-backed companies such as Hutchison Whampoa Ltd and TOM Group were not involved, the source said.

The stake boosts Li’s holdings to a 0.8 percent share of Facebook while Microsoft’s holds another 1.6 percent.

A Facebook spokesman declined to comment on Li’s stake.

MarketWatch broke details of the story earlier out of Hong Kong, quoting Li as saying “I may raise my investment in Facebook — anything is possible” during an earnings conference call for his company Hutchison Whampoa. But the report did not detail the scope of his investment.

Founded in 1980, the Li Ka Shing Foundation has focused on funding a variety of health, education and environmental projects in recent years.

In prior rounds dating back to 2004, Facebook has taken about $40.7 million from venture capital investors including PayPal co-founder and former CEO Peter Thiel along with Accel Partners, Greylock Partners and Meritech Capital Partners.

iPhone Goes Corporate

By Scott Hillis Thu Mar 6, 6:21 PM ET

CUPERTINO, California (Reuters) – Apple Inc said on Thursday its iPhone soon will support corporate e-mail, targeting a new market and challenging the dominance of Research In Motion Ltd‘s popular Blackberry devices….

Apple said the iPhone would work with Microsoft Corp‘s Exchange software for managing business e-mails, contacts and calendars and “pushing” that information to handheld devices.

“We are doing all of these things with the next release of iPhone software,” Phil Schiller, vice president of global marketing for Apple, said at the company’s headquarters. “I think enterprise customers are going to be pretty excited.”

The new programming tools are also seen as a way to build more interest in the iPhone, which has so far only been able to run outside programs through the Web browser. The tool kit will let software makers write applications that can tap more of the iPhone’s capabilities, such as its touch-sensitive screen and motion sensors.

“Starting today, we are opening up the same native (interfaces) and tools that we use internally to build all our iPhone applications,” said Scott Forstall, vice president of iPhone software.

Programs will only be available through a new “apps store” on the iPhone and in Apple’s iTunes software that currently sells music and videos. Apple will keep 30 percent of revenue, with the rest going to developers.

We Are The Ones Song by will.i.am

Ohio and Texas Democratic Party primaries tomorrow and here’s the new music video from will.i.am for Obama. I watched the video a couple times, there’s blacks, whites, Hispanics and Latinos, but where are the Asians, hmm…. makes me wonder. Shame, that really kills the song. Wonder who Al Gore would pick.

[I’m all for Hillary though, :)]

China Couple to Sue Subway over Leaked Kiss Video

BEIJING (Reuters) – An incensed Chinese couple, videotaped hugging and kissing on a subway platform, plan to sue the subway’s operator after the video was uploaded to Youtube and other Web sites, attracting thousands of hits.

The three-minute video of the couple in their 20s was shot in September and uploaded to Youtube and Chinese video-sharing Web sites last week, Tuesday’s China Daily reported, citing a local newspaper.

It drew more than 15,000 hits in two days, it said.

“A mocking voice can be heard in the background of the video. It has extremely embarrassed the couple,” the paper said.

The couple had hired a lawyer in the interests “of all passengers traveling on metro trains in Shanghai,” the paper quoted the unnamed man in the video as saying.
