Canon Updates Firmware for 5D Mark II

This from DPReview:

“Canon has released updated firmware for the EOS 5D Mk II. Firmware v1.0.7 addresses the ‘black dot’ and vertical banding issues experienced by users of firmware 1.0.6. The latest version can be downloaded from Canon’s website. The company also asks users to update their DPP and Picture Style Editor software.”

Important information for EOS 5D Mark II users.

We have learned that some users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera (with firmware version 1.0.6) have identified two types of image quality phenomena that appear under certain shooting conditions.

  1. “Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
  2. Vertical banding noise

Details of the phenomena and shooting conditions under which they are likely to occur (if the firmware is version 1.0.6) are as follows:

  1. “Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
When shooting night scenes, the right side of point light sources (such as lights from building windows) may become black. The phenomenon may become visible if the images are enlarged to 100% or above on a monitor or if extremely large prints of the images are made.
  2. Vertical banding noise
If the recording format is set to sRAW1, vertical banding noise may become visible depending on the camera settings, subject, and background.
    ▪ Vertical banding noise is not noticeable if the recording format is set to sRAW2.
    ▪ Vertical banding noise does not occur if the recording format is set to RAW or JPEG.
    ▪ Noise can be reduced if C.Fn II-3: Highlight tone priority is set to 0: Disable.

Firmware version 1.0.7. that addresses these phenomena is now available for downloading from the following Web site:

Canon responds to Black Dot and Banding Concerns

Canon statement:

To Owners of the EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have learned that some users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera have identified two types of image quality phenomena that appear under certain shooting conditions.

  1. “Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
  2. Vertical banding noise

We are currently investigating and analysing the causes, and examining measures to reduce or eliminate these phenomena by providing correction firmware. An announcement will be made on http://www.canon-europe.com as soon as measures have been determined.

Details of the phenomena and shooting conditions under which they are likely to occur are as follows.

Canon apologizes for any inconvenience caused and thanks photographers for their patience.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Review – Camera Labs – ‘black dot’ Issue

The review of the Canon 5D Mark II is up on Camera Labs.  But the fun read out of the whole review is the notes on the “black dot” issue of the 5D Mark II and the following is the extract (note my highlight in italics).

“The biggest issue facing the 5D Mark II is hopefully a temporary one: the infamous black dot issue reported by many early adopters. This affects images with very high contrast subjects, typically a saturated white area next to one that’s very dark. Typical examples include lights on city views at night, bright stars on astro-photos and seasonally enough, Christmas Tree lamps. The artefact appears as a very dark mark alongside the bright, saturated area, and you can see an example here from an image we took with the Mark II. The effect appears with or without Highlight Tone Priority, Auto Lighting Optimizer and Noise Reduction, and also exists on the RAW data. At the time of writing Canon has promised a response, and we can only hope it involves a firmware update and not a recall. If you take the kind of photos which could be affected and like to view them on-screen at 100%, then you’ll want to wait and see how the situation develops. If however the effect doesn’t bother you, or you rarely take images it would affect, then it may not be an issue. Certainly it did not appear in any of our standard indoor and outdoor test shots including those on our Gallery and Results pages.”

HD Video – Tokyo Reality (Made with the Canon 5D Mark II)

[Update] Try this link for the video, the YouTube link seemed to be removed.

A while back I blogged about the great demo video made by the Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Vincent Laforet using the Canon’s 5D Mark II on my photo blog, Phooey Pics.  This week, we saw yet another great vid using the new Canon DSLR, this time by the guys over at Akihabaranews.  The following is the excerpt on the equipment used in making the great vid.

“During some free time from work David (our photographer) and Florent (our video editor for NihonCar.com and ManualGear.com), put together a STUNNING Canon 5D Mark II video demo. We noticed it was made without technical support, only two little hands to carry the camera, and a MacBook Pro for video editing.

Our setting were pretty simple, we used a Canon 5D Mark II, with the following Canon lenses:

14mm f2.8L II
17-40mm f4L
50mm f1.4
90mm TS-E f2.8
135mm f2.0L

…along with your average MacBookPro 15″ (old gen). No color FX on the video.”
