HTC Upgrade Touch Diamond English ROM and CE-Star

[25 July 2008] HTC just released the CE-Star upgrade kit and English ROM code for their Touch Diamond English version on Wednesday.

For more information, head over to HTC e-Club over at HTC’s website (http://www.htc.com/hk-en/). You would need to first register with HTC e-Club before you can access the download page.  The size of the English ROM code is 130+ MB and at times the download speed is pretty slow, so watch out.

[Updated: 26 July 2008] Finally found time to do the upgrade and it was swift.  Took me 15 minutes to get the ROM updated.

Heads-up Comparison – HTC Touch Diamond vs Samsung i900 Omnia

Pic from GSMArena

If you’re one of those who don’t care much for the iPhone or the new iPhone 3G and wishing for something different, there is a good chance you’ve been looking into the HTC Touch Diamond (the Diamond) or the Samsung i900 Omnia (the Omnia) lately.  Well, if that’s the case, aren’t you in luck today for GSMArena just rolled out a 9-page head-to-head comparison between the Diamond and the Omnia.

The comparison is one of the most thorough comparison I’ve seen in years and it covers areas such as design and construction; the display; the Touch interfaces; multimedia management and performance; connectivity and web browsing; the camera and last but not least, the bundled softwares.

It took me well over 30 minutes to digest the whole comparison and I’m sure you would find it to be as informative as I found it to be.  Link to the comparison here.

For now, I’m just gonna leave you with their short comparison highlights.

Diamond over Omnia:

  • VGA display (2.8-inch, 480 x 640 pixels)
  • TouchFLO 3D Home screen (better than Omnia’s Touchwiz UI)
  • Nicer design
  • More compact body
  • Lighter weight
  • Active magnetic stylus (Omnia has no stylus slot)
  • Touch-sensitive scroll wheel (better than Omnia’s optical joystick)
  • Better sunlight legibility (by a small margin)
  • Standard miniUSB slot (as opposed to Samsung’s proprietary custom plus)
  • Dedicated graphics chip with 64MB memory
  • Comes with the amusing Teeter game (uses the accelerometer)
  • Has pre-installed YouTube client and MP3 Trimmer application for ringtones
  • Better video playback performance

Omnia over Diamond:

  • Bigger, though lower-res display (3.2″, 240 x 400 pixels)
  • Has a better, more solid build and finish
  • Almost double battery life
  • Better CPU performance (by a nice margin according to software benchmarks)
  • Quad-band GSM support (Diamond has two versions to cover all the four bands)
  • microSD card slot (Diamond has none)
  • 8 or 16 GB of storage memory (Diamond has 4GB)
  • Much better 5 megapixel camera (better processing, higher resolution, face and smile detection, geotagging)
  • TV-out (Diamond lacks that)
  • Landscape QWERTY keyboard (Diamond has one but only in browser)
  • Auto screen rotation is available in all applications and can be switched off
  • Comes with DivX video support (Diamond has none, but DivX players can be installed)
  • Has pre-installed a custom Alarms app, a Video editor and a unit converter

My Gears – Some Quick Pics on the HTC Touch Diamond – Day 1

Still spending much time trying to get familiar with the Diamond. Took some side-by-side comparison pics for now, review will have to come in a bit later.

From left to right, HTC Touch; the HTC Touch Diamond, the HTC Touch Cruise and the iPhone. Noted the glare off the phone screen, the HTC Touch Diamond still have the best readability from the lightings flare, I assume similar results from outdoors.

From top to bottom, the HTC Touch, the HTC Touch Diamond, the HTC Touch Cruise and the iPhone on the bottom.

HTC Touch Diamond and Cruise on side-to side. Notice the screen a lot more crisp and sharp, tell you what, the VGA screen on the Touch Diamond rocks.

A side pic comparison with the HTC Diamond in front, and the HTC Touch Cruise at the back, the Diamond is so much thinner and sleeker. Pure art.

My Day 1 conclusion, the Touch Cruise is gonna go.
